Mikaela Stewart was born and raised in San Diego, California and started her professional training with Maxim Tchernychev at San Diego School of Ballet under the direction of Robin Morgan. She later continued her training with Maxim Tchernychev at California Professional Ballet Program. During her training years, Mikaela attended several summer intensives on scholarship including American Ballet Theater, Bolshoi NYC, and Ellison Ballet. In 2020, Mikaela joined Boston Ballet’s inaugural year of their Graduate Program under direction of Kathleen Mitchell, along with studying under Peter Stark, Margaret Tracey, Igor Burlak, Dalay Parrando, and Andrea Long. During her two years in Boston’s Graduate Program, Mikaela performed in multiple student choreographic pieces for Boston Ballet and Boston Ballet School, along with excerpts from ballets like Swan Lake and Don Quixote. During this time, she had the opportunity to tour with Boston Ballet 2, performing Clara and Snow pas for Boston Ballet 2’s The Nutcracker, under direction of Peter Stark. Mikaela was a part of Boston Ballet’s major productions, such as Mikko Nissinens The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.
Mikaela joined BSA in 2022 as an Apprentice and is excited to continue at BSA as a Corps de Ballet member for the 2023-24 season.
Get to know Mikaela
When did you start dancing, and why?
I started dancing at age three, but really started to take ballet seriously around age 11. It was at this time I decided to practice more and considered what it would be like to dance as a professional when I grew up.
What inspires you to be a professional dancer?
When I was younger, I was really inspired to dance from watching the older students at my studio. I was fortunate to grow up with great role models I could look up to. As a professional, I am surrounded by amazing and supportive dancers who inspire me every day.
Why did you choose Ballet San Antonio?
I chose BSA because I saw the opportunity to work with an excellent director and repertoire. I saw BSA as a place that would challenge me as a dancer, along with giving me wonderful opportunities to grow as an artist an person. I love working with this company and look forward to another season!
