Ballet San Antonio’s THE NUTCRACKER is Proudly Sponsored by H-E-B.
On a snowy night at the Stahlbaum home, Clara and her rambunctious brother, Fritz, celebrate Christmas Eve. Suddenly, Clara’s uncle, Herr Drosselmeyer – a mysterious and magical toymaker – arrives and introduces his handsome nephew. Drosselmeyer saved a special gift for Clara, a beautiful, wooden Nutcracker. Consumed by jealousy, Fritz tries to snatch him. In the heat of the fight, she falls to the floor and when she stands, something feels different!
Restless, Clara returns downstairs for her beloved Nutcracker. She asks the Nutcracker to dance with her, when suddenly giant mice appear! Drosselmeyer appears and banishes the evil mice. He puts Clara to sleep as the living room transforms. Clara awakens to find herself the same size as her toys! Drosselmeyer brings The Nutcracker to life, the officious Mouse Queen appears and a battle ensues. The Nutcracker slays the Mouse Queen, but only through the intervention of Clara. The Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince, who Clara realizes resembles Herr Drosselmeyer’s nephew. He takes her on a journey where snowflakes dazzle and the Snow Queen and King guide them along their way to the Land of Sweets.
Clara and the Prince arrive at the Land of Sweets, greeted by the enchanting Sugar Plum Fairy – who resembles her Godmother. Everyone is thrilled to hear that the Mouse Queen was defeated. Filled with joy, the kingdom dances in celebration. Hot Chocolate from Spain begins the festivities, followed by Chinese Tea and Arabian Coffee. The Russian Trepak delivers a spectacular display, along with the sweet Marzipan and Mother Ginger who arrives with her dancing Polichinelles. Shimmering flowers appear as Clara and the Prince lead their waltz, fulfilling her ultimate dream to dance. Finally, the Sugar Plum Fairy returns and Clara watches breathlessly as she soars through the air with her Cavalier. Impressed with Clara’s courageousness, the Sugar Plum Fairy offers Clara the kingdom.
Before Clara can respond, she finds herself back in her living room; her Nutcracker now back to his old self. Was it all a dream or did her wonderful uncle send her on a captivating journey through the Land of Snow and Sweets?
Welcome to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and your Ballet San Antonio’s annual holiday production of The Nutcracker, choreographed by Haley and Easton Smith, and proudly sponsored by H-E-B.
We would like to thank our generous sponsors, incredible Children’s Cast and Mother Ginger Honorees, the CMI Orchestra, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, and the staff, board of directors and dancers of Ballet San Antonio, all without whom this production would not be possible.
On behalf of all of us at Ballet San Antonio, thank you for being here with us. Your patronage not only supports our performances here at the Tobin Center, but also our community outreach efforts to offer free ballet classes with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio, Haven for Hope and our ability to offer The Nutcracker Film, free of charge, to students across the state of Texas. We are grateful beyond measure and please enjoy the show.
Sincerely,
