Audition for The Nutcracker Children’s Cast (Ages 6-18)

Ballet San Antonio, San Antonio's only professional ballet company, invites young dancers to audition for the Children's Cast of The Nutcracker. Selected cast members will have the exciting opportunity to perform on the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts stage alongside Ballet San Antonio's professional company dancers.
Whether you're a School of Ballet San Antonio (SBSA) student or train at another studio, we welcome dancers to audition for this unforgettable performance experience.

Girls: Any color leotard, tights, ballet slippers, and hair neatly secured in a bun.
Boys: Any color athletic shirt or leotard with tights or bike shorts, ballet shoes with socks or tights, and hair neat and away from the face.

Your child’s age as of September 1, 2026 determines the age group for which they are eligible.

For their safety, we will only have auditions on flat (ballet slippers). We want to be sure your child is safely trained to wear pointe shoes before they're on the Tobin Center stage!

Ballet San Antonio is San Antonio’s only professional ballet company, so the principal roles such as Clara, the Nutcracker, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Snowflakes, and Flowers are performed by professional dancers. Children play an essential part in the production as Fritz, Party Children, Soldiers, Mice, Angels, and Polichinelles. We encourage dancers of all experience levels to audition, as there are roles suited to a variety of ages and abilities.

Casting results will be emailed by Friday, August 28.

All rehearsals will be at our rehearsal studio (2211 N.W. Military Hwy San Antonio, TX 78213). Our dress rehearsal will be held at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts (Date TBD).

Children's Cast members are expected to attend all rehearsals and are limited to two absences. Rehearsals begin on Saturday, September 19 and are held on Saturdays, with the earliest groups starting at 2:00 PM and the last groups finishing by 5:00 PM, depending on the role. Individual rehearsal schedules will be released with casting and are subject to change.

Performance fees are $60 for SBSA students and $120 for non-SBSA students. These fees help cover the maintenance of Ballet San Antonio costumes. This is separate from the $40 audition fee.

Students also showcase their growth in our Annual Spring Showcase, and may participate in other community performances with the professional company throughout the year.

Most of our faculty is made up of Ballet San Antonio’s professional company dancers — seasoned performers with a passion for teaching. In every class, students learn from the same artists they see on stage, gaining personal attention, expert training, and real-world inspiration.

Three Tracks: Find Your Path
PRE-BALLET
FOR AGES 2-7
Up to age 7, all students participate in our Pre-Ballet Program, where they build foundational coordination, rhythm, and imagination through movement. A fun, age-appropriate curriculum offers joy and lots of smiles.
Enrollment is open — no placement required.
PRE-PROFESSIONAL
FOR AGES 8-18
For students with the passion and commitment to pursue a future in dance, our Pre-Professional Track offers structured, rigorous training in ballet and related disciplines — all led by an experienced faculty, including current dancers from Ballet San Antonio.
In addition to ballet class, students in this track are required to attend additional classes to augment their studies. Modern and Pilates Classes is required for all students in Levels 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, Pointe Class is required for girl Levels 4, 5 and 6.
Placement required for enrollment.
RECREATIONAL
FOR AGES 7-18
For dancers ages 7–18 who enjoy the beauty and discipline of ballet without the goal of becoming a professional dancer, SBSA offers a Recreational track within Levels 1–6. Recreational students train alongside their peers in the same level but attend fewer classes per week. This path allows students to experience high-quality training and the joy of ballet in a way that complements their individual goals and broader interests.

PRE-BALLET

Dance with Me 2+ is a fun and bonding dance class for students age 2, and their parent or caregiver. This class introduces young dancers to the dance studio through creative movement, rhythm, musicality, and social skills.
Dance with Me 2+ meets 1x/week for 45 minutes.

Students in this level are introduced to the art of dance through movement exploration, creative imagery, props, and musical identification. This is the first class dancers are independent of their parent or caregiver.
Hummingbirds meet 1x/week for 1 hour.
Student must be 3 years old by September 1st.

Robins will further expand on the students ’creative exploration, strength building, teamwork, and discipline. The building blocks of basic ballet vocabulary and structure are introduced.
Robins meet 1x/week for 1 hour.
Student must be 4 years old by September 1st.

Owls grow the ballet vocabulary and expand on the ballet class structure, with the barre introduced in the Spring. Creativity and deepening musical understanding continue to be explored.
Owls meet 1x/week for 1 hour.
Student must be 6 years old by September 1st.
PRE-PROFESSIONAL

The first level of the Pre-Professional Division, Level 1 presents the building blocks of a ballet class structure and deepens the ballet vocabulary. This class aims to strengthen technique, stamina, and concentration for beginning ballet students.
Level 1 meets 2x/week for 1 hour.
Student must be 8 years old by September 1st.

Level 2 builds on the skills and vocabulary mastered in Level 1, with class time extending by 15 minutes. Added emphasis is placed on posture, placement, and material retention.
Required Classes:
Level 2 meets 3x/week for 1 hour, 15 minutes plus Pilates 1x/week for 1 hour.

Level 3 builds on the skills and vocabulary mastered in prior levels, now attending more and with extended class times. Students are introduced to more challenging material, and higher demand is placed on execution of existing technique.
Required Classes:
Level 3 meets 3x/week for 1.5 hours plus Pilates 1x/week for 1 hour.

Level 4 classes aim to strengthen technique, further expand vocabulary, and build strength in ankles and feet with Pre-Pointe. Pointe work is introduced at this level in the Spring Session after a physical assessment.
Required Classes:
Level 4 meets 4x/week for 1.5 hours plus Pilates 1x/week for 1 hour and Modern 1x/week for 1 hour.

Level 5 technique continues to build with more demanding material and advancing pointe work.
Required Classes:
Level 5 meets 5x/week for 2 hours (except Tuesday which is 1.5 hours) plus Pilates 1x/week for 1 hour and Modern 1x/week for 1 hour.

Level 6 focus technique and the vocabulary deepens, with an emphasis placed on refining and growing pointe work execution with extended class times.
Required Classes:
Level 6 meets 5x/week for 2 hours plus Pilates 1x/week for 1 hour and Modern 1x/week for 1 hour.

Required for all Pre-Professional Division students in Levels 2-6. Pilates classes focus on core strength, precise alignment, and hip mobility to enhance dance technique and injury prevention.
This class meets 1x/week on Saturday for 1 hour.

Required for all Pre-Professional Division students in Levels 4-6, Modern classes will incorporate many of the foundations of modern dance technique, including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement. Dancers will explore new ways of moving in combinations, floor work and improvisation.
This class meets 1x/week on Saturday for 1 hour.
