The Story of Giselle

ACT 1

The curtain rises on a picturesque village in the Rhineland during harvest season. Giselle, a sweet and innocent peasant girl, loves to dance despite her fragile heart. She falls deeply in love with a charming young man named Albrecht, unaware that he is actually a nobleman in disguise - engaged to the aristocratic Bathilde. Giselle’s admirer, Hilarion, a local gamekeeper, suspects Albrecht’s true identity and exposes his deceit before the entire village. Devastated by betrayal and heartbreak, Giselle’s mind unravels in one of ballet’s most famous “mad scenes.” Overwhelmed by sorrow, she collapses and dies, leaving those around her in grief and guilt.

ACT 2

As night falls, the story shifts to a moonlit forest near Giselle’s grave. Here, the Wilis - spirits of young women who died before their weddings - rise from their tombs to lure men into a deadly dance of vengeance. Their queen, Myrtha, commands their ghostly power with chilling grace. When Albrecht arrives to mourn Giselle, the Wilis emerge to claim him. Yet, Giselle’s love endures beyond death; she pleads with Myrtha for mercy and dances to protect him through the night. Her forgiveness redeems Albrecht, and as dawn breaks, the Wilis retreat to their graves. Giselle’s spirit finds peace, ascending to the afterlife, while Albrecht is left alone - forever changed by her love.

Welcome

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Ballet San Antonio’s 40th Anniversary Season and Giselle!

On behalf of all of us at Ballet San Antonio, we are delighted to welcome you to the opening of our 40th Anniversary Season. It is an honor to have you here with us as we celebrate four decades of bringing world-class ballet to our community.

This performance of Giselle, choreographed by the acclaimed Edwaard Liang, is a masterpiece of beauty and emotion - haunting, romantic, and exquisitely danced by the talented artists of Ballet San Antonio, joined by students from our official school, the School of Ballet San Antonio.

We hope you will join us again this season for The Nutcracker and Cinderella. Your continued support - through your attendance, enthusiasm, and generosity - makes it possible for us to do what we love most: perform for you.

If you are able, please consider making a gift today. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference and helps ensure that ballet continues to flourish in San Antonio.

Thank you for celebrating this milestone season with us. We are grateful that you are here with us and hope you enjoy the performance.
